Job Interview Questions in English: 8 Answers With Examples

7 November 2026 · 5 min read

Have you been invited to a job interview in English, and the date is close? There is no need to panic. Most job interview questions in English come up again and again across companies, so you can prepare for them. Here are 8 common questions, how to answer each one and examples you can adapt to your own experience, plus practical tips and phrases that will help you on the day.

Before the interview: 3 things to prepare

  1. Read the job advert closely: pick out 3 to 5 skills it asks for, and prepare an example from your experience for each.
  2. Research the company: what it does, who its clients are, and why you want to work there.
  3. Practise out loud: reading silently is not enough. Record your answers and listen, or practise with someone.

8 common questions and how to answer them

1. Tell me about yourself

This is not a request for your life story. Answer in one minute: who you are professionally, what you have done and why you are here.

I'm a sales coordinator with four years of experience in the food industry. In my current role, I manage key clients and prepare monthly reports. I'm now looking for a position where I can work with international clients.

2. Why do you want to work here?

Connect what you know about the company with what you want.

I've followed your growth in North Africa, and I'd like to contribute to a company that is expanding into new markets.

3. What are your strengths?

Choose one strength linked to the job, and give evidence.

I'm very organised. In my last job, I set up a tracking system that helped my team meet its deadlines.

4. What is your greatest weakness?

Mention a real weakness that is not essential for the job, then what you are doing about it.

I sometimes find it hard to delegate. I've started planning tasks with my team at the start of each week, and it's helping.

5. Tell me about a challenge you faced

Use the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action and Result. Focus on what you did yourself.

6. Why are you leaving your current job?

Never criticise your current employer. Talk about what you are looking for.

I've learned a lot in my current role, but I'm looking for more responsibility and new challenges.

7. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Show reasonable ambition that fits this line of work.

I see myself developing my skills in this field and taking on more responsibility, perhaps leading a small team.

8. Do you have any questions for us?

Do not say No. Prepare two questions, such as:

What does success look like in this role during the first six months?

Typical mistakes by Arabic and French speakers

  • I have 30 years instead of I'm 30 years old
  • I work here since 2022 instead of I've been working here since 2022
  • I am responsible of instead of I am responsible for
  • informations instead of information, which has no plural in English
  • I did a formation instead of I did a training course

Phrases that save you

  • To buy time: That's a good question. Let me think for a moment.
  • If you did not understand: Could you repeat the question, please?
  • To check: Do you mean my experience with clients?
  • If you make a mistake: Sorry, let me say that again.

Online interviews: small details that matter

  • Test your connection, microphone and camera before the time.
  • Choose a quiet place with a plain background.
  • Look at the camera when you speak, not at your own image.
  • Keep a short note in front of you, but do not read your answers.

A 7-day preparation plan

  • Days 1 and 2: write your answers to the 8 questions.
  • Days 3 and 4: simplify them and practise out loud.
  • Days 5 and 6: do a mock interview with someone, recorded if possible.
  • Day 7: a light review and a good night's sleep.

If your interview is close, private lessons at 30 TND per hour let you work on your own questions, and private Business lessons are 45 TND per hour. To build your work English over a longer period, the Business Core programme covers meetings, email, presentations and negotiation: 32 hours over 8 weeks for 580 TND, or 2 payments of 290 TND.

A full STAR example

Here is an answer to Tell me about a challenge you faced, ready to adapt to your own work:

  • Situation: Last year, our biggest client complained about late deliveries.
  • Task: My job was to find the cause and keep the client.
  • Action: I reviewed the orders with the logistics team and set up a weekly call with the client.
  • Result: Deliveries improved within two months, and the client renewed the contract.

The sentences are short, in the past simple, and the whole answer fits in a minute. Prepare two or three stories like this: a problem you solved, a disagreement in a team and a success. Do not invent anything, because the employer may ask for details.

Frequently asked questions

What level do I need for an interview in English?

It depends on the job. To find your level, take the placement test and read our guide to English levels.

Should I memorise my answers?

Memorise the ideas and key phrases, not the full text, so that you sound natural.

What if I cannot find a word?

Explain the idea in simpler words. An employer cares more about clear communication than big words.
